Clinical Experience

Andrew is the senior consultant neurosurgeon at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. He has been an NHS Consultant Neurosurgeon for over twenty years.

Andrew completed clinical training at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School in London in 1991. Andrew was house surgeon to the President of the Royal College of Surgeons. He trained in general surgery and neurotrauma based at the neuroscience department at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where he also served as a research fellow, conducting a nationwide clinical audit of an innovative programmable shunt valve for the treatment of hydrocephalus.

Andrew completed the old-style FRCS before joining the West of Scotland Neurosurgical Training Program. The training was based at the Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow and included a one-year placement at the Dundee Royal Infirmary.

The Wellcome Trust awarded Andrew a prestigious Research Training Fellowship, which led to an MD thesis and MD degree. Andrew completed speciality training and holds the speciality qualification FRCS (Neurological Surgery) in neurosurgery. He was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST). He has full entry on the GMC Specialist Register (3276327) for Neurosurgery. Andrew is fully indemnified, ICO registered, and GDPR compliant, using the MidexPro platform.

Clinical Interests

Andrew now specialises in adult complex lateral skull base surgery and complex neuro-oncology. He focuses on tumours affecting teenagers and young adults, as well as tumours of the pineal and intraventricular regions. Andrew has extensive experience in a wide range of neurosurgical conditions. Andrew has fifteen years of consultant experience as a spinal and paediatric neurosurgeon. He focuses on tumours affecting Teenagers and Young Adults and on tumours of the pineal and intraventricular region. Andrew operates on complex and high-risk neurosurgical conditions which require complex post-surgical aftercare, including intensive care.

Research Interests

Andrew has published over twenty peer-reviewed papers in the surgical literature. Andrew received a prestigious award and research grant from the Wellcome Trust. Andrew did collaborative research at the University of Glasgow, University College London and Nancy, France. He has published an MD thesis and has a research doctorate. It focuses on his research on apolipoprotein E in cerebrospinal fluid. This research studied patients with traumatic brain injury and subarachnoid haemorrhage. He has written three book chapters. Andrew's non-surgical interests include team science, team-first working, and complexity thinking.

Leadership and Mentorship Experience

As UHB's senior neurosurgeon and service lead, he supports the department in addressing ongoing challenges. He mentors consultants and trainees.
